Meet Our Team

Dr. Kris Hiller

Associate Director for the Writing and Language Studio
English/Russian/Other Language Coach

Hi! Привет! 你好! My name is Kris Hiller, and I direct the Writing and Language Studio, so you can often see me at WLS events. I also teach academic writing. I’m from the USA, but I’ve also lived in Russia, Korea, and China. I speak English, Russian, and a little Mandarin, which I’m trying to work on. I love learning about—and helping others learn about and develop skills in—languages and intercultural communication. When I’m not busy with other work for the WLS, I can help you with any area of English language learning, though I’m particularly interested in vocabulary development, reading, and pronunciation. I can also help with beginning and intermediate Russian. Come talk to me about your language learning!

Hello! My name is Shuhan, and I am a writing and language learning coach. I am from Nanjing, China. I have studied and lived in the United States for four years, and I speak Mandarin, Cantonese, English, and a little bit of Korean. I love learning about other people's culture as well as helping others develop skills and knowledge in intercultural communication.

Hello! My name is Tyler Carter and I am a coach at the WLS. I also teach Academic Writing and Communication Skills for the graduate programs at Duke Kunshan. My first language is English (of the American variety), I speak a little Japanese, and I am a beginning Chinese learner. I'd be happy to work on any kind of writing project, from academic to creative writing.

Joseph Davies

Hi! 你好! ¡Hola! My name is Joe Davies, and I’m a language learning coach in the Writing and Language Studio. I also teach Academic Communication Skills and Academic Writing for the graduate programs here at DKU. I’m from the UK but have been living in China for the past ten years. My first language is English and I also speak Mandarin Chinese and some Spanish. I am here to support your English language learning and writing. I am particularly interested in how culture influences language learning, developing students’ pronunciation, and developing students’ reading skills. I look forward to working with you and to helping you meet your language learning goals.

Lu Liu

你好!Hi! My name is Lu Liu, and I’m a language learning coach. I can help you with your Chinese learning! My degree is in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, and my research focuses on Bilingual Chinese Culture Communication. I used to be a Chinese teacher at Chinese Conversation Club at Duke University, and a 1-to-1 Chinese teacher in a Chinese school in the US. If you are interested in Chinese culture, such as Chinese cuisine, Chinese tea culture, traveling in China … come and talk with me!

Hello! My name is Suzanne and I am a graduate student writing coach. I come from Malaysia, and have spent some of my formative years in Japan as well as four years of my childhood in the US. I love interacting with people from various cultures, as I strive to find creative ways to support individual writing goals. Martina is a Medical Physics Graduate Student, and an English writing coach. She can help you with constructive writings. She has experience in scientific writings. She will be happy to grant you a helping hand in becoming a good writer. With her, writing is a fun activity.

Lisa (Hang) Su

¡Hola! My name is Su Hang, or you can call me Lisa. I am here to help you with Mandarin Chinese/English language learning. I used to teach Chinese in Thailand and the United States for two years. Apart from Mandarin and English, I also speak basic Thai and a little bit of Japanese. I am currently learning Español on my own and I would love to work and learn something new with you together!

你好!Hi! My name is Fay. I am a language learning coach at the WLS. Fay is here now, hoping to help you improve your Chinese learning in any area. I taught Chinese in the United States for about one year, I speak some English, know a little bit of Japanese and ready to learn Spanish. I may help you with oral Chinese practicing, Chinese writing, making an effective Chinese learning plan. One thing want you know is that when you are learning Chinese together with me, have faith in yourself, don’t need to be nervous, I am your “cane” beside you and looking forward to seeing you throw the “cane” one day! By the way, if you are interested in traveling, fitness and shopping, I’d like to share my experiences and listen to your stories!
