Using the Library

Thousands of printed and multimedia titles at Duke Kunshan University Library are available for DKU users. Millions of Duke University libraries collections are accessible when DKU users with NetIds study on Durham campus.

DKU users have 24/7 access to over 220,000 e-journal titles, over 1000 databases of scholarly materials, and approximately 1.8 million electronic books from Duke University libraries.

  • Undergraduate and graduate students must return all DKU Library materials before graduation
  • *Faculty must return all DKU Library materials before the end of their term at DKU
 

How do I request to hold an item?

You can REQUEST for regular loan books and DVDs that are on the shelf at DKU Library or in remote storage to be held for you to collect at a later date.

Follow these steps to place a request:

  • Click the green "Request" button to the right of the title
  • Enter your NetID and password
  • Click the blue "Request" button
  • Choose Duke Kunshan Library as your pick up or delivery location
  • Click “Place Request” button

Items in remote storage will be delivered to DKU Library in the following time frame:

  • Requests placed before 2:00 pm: available same day
  • Requests placed after 2:00 pm: available next day

Please note: Requests are processed on weekdays only. Requests placed after 2:00 pm on Friday or on weekends will be available the following Monday.

You will receive an email when the items are ready to collect. Your request will be held for 3 business days.

How do I recall an item?

You can RECALL regular loan books and DVDs that are on loan to another person. The loan length for the borrower is shortened and the item will be held for you when it is returned.

Follow these steps to recall an item:

  • Click the green "Request" button to the right of the title
  • Enter your NetID and password
  • Click the "Recall" button to the right of the title
  • Choose Duke Kunshan Library as your pickup or delivery location
  • Click “Place Request” button

The borrower has 7 days to return the item. We will email you when your recalled item is ready for pickup. The recalled items will be held for 5 days.

How do I renew an item?

You can RENEW your DKU Library regular loan books and DVDs online, by phone, email, chat, machine or in person.

Follow these steps to renew online:

  • Click My Accounts
  • Enter your NetID and password.
  • Scroll down to find the “Titles on Loan”
  • Check the box next to each item you wish to renew
  • Click the “Renew Selected title(s)” button

You cannot renew Course Reserve items or items that are overdue, lost or recalled. One semester loan items can only be renewed in the last week of the semester.

 

Reserving Course Materials

  • Materials placed on reserve for courses are available at the Service Desk and may be checked out for 3 hours.
  • Library’s open hours is from 7:00AM to 11:00PM. Reserved books checked out after 8:00PM must be returned before 9:00AM the day after.
  • All reserved materials cannot be requested or renewed.
  • Faculty may place items on reserve by coming to the service desk or by emailing library staff.
 

Getting Materials from Other Libraries

There are two ways to request scanned copies of journal articles or book chapters not available at DKU or Duke Libraries:

  • Using Duke Libraries Document Delivery Services for English journal articles or book chapters (not the whole book):
    • Click Here to log in with your NetID to enter the document delivery service.
    • For users new to the service,  follow instruction to create an account,  fill out all required information, and be sure to select any one of the listed libraries from the  Delivery Location Box.
    • Select Article or Chapter from the side bar, fill out required information, and submit.
    • Wait for 2-3 days to access your account to check the status of your request. 
  • Sending your request to dkulibrary@dukekunshan.edu.cn for Chinese journal articles, books, or book chapters.

Note: Unfortunately, library staff can't send books or physical items from Duke in Durham or other American libraries to DKU.
