Residence Life

About Us

Residence Life’s mission to create opportunities to live, learn, and lead.  Though Residence Life and Housing both work to create a positive living experience, it’s important to understand the differences between the two offices.  Residence Life is the department within the office of Student Affairs responsible for the community building aspects of living on campus (e.g., RA team, community events, and room assignments and bills).  Housing is the office within Operations responsible for the facility aspects of living on campus (e.g., housekeeping, work requests, room inspections, air quality, drinking water, and refrigerator rental).

Timeline

Please be understanding while the timeline to apply for a room assignment changes due to the pandemic.  We hope to open the application in June for international students, and in July for domestic students.  Before the application is open, Residence Life will send an email to all students’ DKU email address with instructions for accessing the application and the deadline by which to complete it.

Residence Halls

All first-year students will live on our main campus (either the Conference Center [CC] or the Student Residence Hall [SRH]) or across the street at the Canadian International School of Kunshan (CISK).  The CC is a hotel converted to a residence hall so each room has two students living there (called a double) and there is a bathroom, shower, and sink within the room.  The SRH is a suite-styled residence hall that has four students living inside in either a room by themselves (called a single) or in a shared room (double), two bathrooms, and a living room.  There is a shared community kitchen on the first floor.  The CISK is a hotel-styled residence hall that has two students living inside a bedroom that also has an enclosed bathroom, shower, and sink.  There are shared kitchens on each floor.

Applying for a Room Assignment

In the application, students are asked about their planned lifestyle (e.g., preferences about smoking, alcohol, studying, sleeping, etc.).  Residence Life then pairs compatible students as roommates and suitemates (specific roommate requests aren’t possible).  To promote intercultural learning, all international students will have a Chinese roommate.  Additionally, the application asks about residence hall and room type (single or double) preferences.  Once roommates are made, students will be placed into rooms by preference.  While we collect preferences, no student should expect to get exactly what they asked for since there is a limited supply and high demand.  High demand and low supply spaces will be held for Chinese students since their application window is later.  The room rates are listed on the page below.
