Freshman Orientation in Social Science happens at the beginning of each fall semester. The Center for the Study of Contemporary China organizes a near-half-day teaching session for freshmen with an interest in social sciences. The session introduces Duke Kunshan undergraduates to fundamental concerns and selected important topics in empirical research in the social sciences. It offers undergraduate students the opportunity to learn the steps of conducting rigorous and systematic research in social science.

9am: Welcome from Melanie Manion, Vor Broker Family Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Duke University and co-director of the Center for the Study of Contemporary China.

9:15am: Doing Social Science with Surveys with Yu Wang, assistant professor of social science at Duke Kunshan, with Eyer Ding, Youran Pan and Zhiye Zhou.

10:15am: Doing Social Science with Big Data with Charles Chang, assistant professor of environment and urban studies at Duke Kunshan.

11am: Doing Social Science with Fieldwork with Keping Wu, associate professor of anthropology at Duke Kunshan
