About “Old Mei in Huangpotan Village”
Personal accounts of 21 elderly women from a village in Southeast China. The film approaches topics on childhood, marriage, political movements, and the supernatural. Everyday life goes on in this village, where fragmented narrations are connected to the emotional effects of fear, pity, joy, bafflement, and self-demeaning that pushes the lives of the characters in the film forward. The village has much to say if observers let go of distinctions between young and old, past and present, and historic and mundane.

About the director
Yu Shuang, a Duke graduate in cultural anthropology, who joined Caochangdi Workstation’s Memory Project in winter 2019. “Old Mei in Huangpotan Village” is her first feature-length documentary film.
