DKU and Duke Leaders Speak at the First International Symposium on Human Resources and Remuneration Management in Beijing

July 11th, Dr. Denis Fred Simon, executive vice chancellor of Duke Kunshan University (DKU), and Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for administration at Duke University, made two separate speeches on talent development at the first International Symposium on Human Resources and Remuneration Management in Beijing. Sponsored by China Association of Higher Education, the Symposium gathered 424 human resource experts from 130 Chinese and international higher education institutions. Dr. Simon and Mr. Cavanaugh were among the invited experts from well-known international institutions to deliver keynote speeches and participate in panel discussions. Feng Youmei, executive vice president of Wuhan University, one of DKU’s founding partners, led discussions at the Symposium’s second sub-forum: Talent Employment and Remuneration Incentive Mechanism in Higher Education.

Titled ‘Status Quo of Talents from an International Perspective: Opportunities and Challenges’, Dr. Simon’s presentation analyzed talent crisis occurring in major developed and developing countries through the lens of population distribution and talent evaluation standards. In response to strong talent needs, he proposed new approaches to talent recruitment and management that take into account the advancement of science and technology, economic globalization, and innovation.

In his talk entitled ‘Strategies for Recruitment, Development and Retention in Higher Education’, Mr. Cavanaugh elaborated on different efforts to recruit and manage talents in U.S. higher education system. He used real-life examples to explain the dynamics and innovations in talent management and the importance of performance evaluations and the pre-determined standards in incentive pay. After the talk, he accepted an exclusive interview with China Higher Education.

At the closing ceremony, Feng Youmei summarized the Symposium’s highlights and reiterated its importance as a landmark in the ten-year development of the Remuneration Management Division of China Association of Higher Education.
