DKU Holds Hadron Physics Workshop to Discuss the Latest Developments and Future Opportunities

August 3rd ‘ 7th, the 7th Workshop on Hadron Physics in China and Opportunities Worldwide, co-hosted by Duke Kunshan University (DKU) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, was successfully held on DKU campus. During the five-day workshop, scientists and researchers from all over the world presented the latest advancements in hadron physics and exchanged views on topics such as promoting future development of hadron physics, establishing international collaboration and innovation platforms, and cultivating talents in China and the world.

Hadrons, the theme of this workshop, are well-known particles in the universe. From tiny atoms to the bright starry night, the majority of the visible matter in the universe is made up of hadrons, which are around every corner of our life. Hadrons, however, are also the most mysterious particles. They participate in all four interactions of the Nature simultaneously. Held together by the non-linear and non-perturbation strong force, hadrons form the sophisticated Microcosms, which bring myths and puzzles to the Physics community. It is known that Chinese scholars have not only taken the lead to establish several hadron physics research teams in China, but also play significant roles at major international research facilities and in international collaborations, contributing remarkably to the research in hadron physics.

The Workshop attracted scholars from countries and regions across the world, including the U.S., Germany, U.K., France, Korea, Taiwan and mainland China. They represented the world’s leading universities and research institutes such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Peking University, University of Science and Technology of China, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), Duke University, Johannes Gutenberg-Universit??t Mainz, Edinburgh University, CEA Saclay, and Seoul National University, and others.

Prof. Robert McKeown, deputy director for science of Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, and Prof. Berndt Mueller, associate laboratory director for nuclear and particle physics of Brookhaven National Laboratory, attended and addressed at the Workshop. Dr. Denis Simon, executive vice chancellor of DKU, delivered the opening remarks. During a media interview, Prof. Mueller pointed out, ‘Hadron Physics community in China is really developing very rapidly and it is really very at the leading edge of the world. So (in) the future of that area, I think that China has many important contributions that we expect that will happen.’ Prof. McKeown believes, ‘It’s wonderful to bring a group of international scientists from around the world here to Kunshan. I think it’s quite exciting and we are all very happy to be here. And I hope that it has positive influence on new university and its new reputation.’ China Science Daily reported this event as their front-cover news in the August 6th edition.
