Duke Kunshan Credit Hour Policy

We follow Duke’s credit hour policy for all undergraduate and graduate courses.

Four (4) Duke Kunshan University undergraduate credits is the equivalent of one (1) undergraduate course credit at Duke University.

Undergraduate Program

There are two types of GPAs: Semester and Cumulative. The semester GPA is calculated using the courses taken in the semester in question. The cumulative GPA is a summary of all DKU courses taken over a student’s career. Transfer course grades outside DUKE are not included in any GPA calculations. Transfer course grades from Duke will be calculated in GPA. To calculate a GPA you need to know the course grade, the course credits associated with that course, and the values associated with each grade.  Note:  DKU does not calculate GPA within any major.

Here are the grade point equivalents

A+=4.0, A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, D-=1.0, F=0.0

GPA Calculation Examples

To calculate a GPA you must first multiply the number of course credits for each course by the grade point values associated with the grade received in that course. Then add all of those totals together and divide that sum by the total number of course credits. For a semester GPA, as well as the cumulative GPA, use all regularly graded courses in the GPA calculation. Do not average semester GPAs in order to calculate the cumulative GPA.

NOTE: All GPAs are truncated to three decimal points.

Here is example of semester GPA calculations:

Class Rank Percentiles

Individual class rankings for undergraduate students were last calculated for Spring 2021. Beginning with the Fall 2021 term class rank percentiles have been calculated by term and made available here. Class rank percentiles are derived by calculating the cumulative grade point average (GPA) of students and comparing them with students sharing the same class standing. The maximum cumulative grade point average is 4.000. Class is defined by those students sharing the same or approximate expected date of graduation. Class for each term is specifically identified beneath the class rank percentile chart for each term.

To find your class rank percentile follow the following steps:

  1. Identify your cumulative GPA in DKUHub.
  2. Determine your “class” as defined under the selected term chart.

Example using the chart below (Fall 2023): If you are a sophomore student with a cumulative GPA of 3.918, you fall within the Top 5% class rank percentile.

The most recently calculated undergraduate class rank percentiles are listed below.

Transcripts

An official transcript is a comprehensive record of a student’s academic record at Duke Kunshan University. Students can request official transcripts for personal use, or request them to be released to a third party. Only one recipient may be identified per request form. It is possible to stipulate that transcripts be withheld until grades and/or degrees have been posted. Please request official transcripts by completing this form.

You can also download and include the following two official documents in your application to graduate schools or fellowships.

Enrollment Verification

The Enrollment Verification documents students’ enrollment status in the current and past terms. Enrollment Verifications are frequently needed to verify eligibility for visa applications, health insurance coverage or for certain types of financial aid.

Official enrollment verifications are available through the Office of the University Registrar at no cost. Students can either physically visit the Registrar Office in the Administrative Building Room 1107 or submit their request by completing the online request form. The request must include your signature authorizing the release of your enrollment information if it is to be sent to a third party.

Please allow three business days for processing from the receipt of the request.

If you wish to confirm receipt of your request, please contact our office at +86 521 3665 7023.
